5 Common Problems with Windows 10 & Their Solutions

During computer repair in Pomona, it has been observed that there is a wide range of problems that users face with their Windows 10 Operating System. In this article, we have identified the five commonest issues people face with Windows 10 and their solutions.

  1. Failure to Upgrade to the Recent Version of Windows 10

You must have observed that Windows 10 receives major updates frequentlylike the May 2020 Updatecodenamed 2004, and the October 2020 Updatecodenamed 20H2. Each of the updates launches new features to Windows 10, along with a few bug fixes and much more.

Even though Windows 10 is the steadiest release to date, one of the commonest problems encountered by the platform users is updating to the newest version of Windows 10 post its release.

While performing a laptop repair in Lake Elsinore, a technician had disclosed that any such updates wouldn't show up as available to all and this implies that you need to upgrade your OS manually. Before you begin updating, you must check that which Windows 10 version you're running presently

You may perform this by going to the "About Windows" screen. To install the most recent version of Windows 10, apply the Windows Update Tool, despite the Media Creation Tool alternative being a better option. You just have to download it, install it, and manually use it for upgrading your PC to the latest version.

  1. Failure to Upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8

One of the commonest challengefaced with Windows 10 is during your attempt to upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8. You may come across a warning that the 'Get Windows 10'or GWX app is incompatible, or the app may not appear at all. This will cause a failed update. You may try a few things for the upgrade, as observed during a computer repair in Riverside:

  • Open Control Panel, then run Windows Update, and check that the PC is up to date. Unfortunately, if updates fail, you may run the Windows Update Troubleshooter.

  • Apply the Media Creation Tool. Don't depend on GWX: visit https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10, click Download tool now, save the tool, and run it on the PC you wish to update.

  • Ensure that hardware Disable Execution Prevention (DEP) is turned on in the BIOS, referring to your motherboard manual for help when you require it. Still, if you face problems, apply the Start Menu to search for 'performance', run Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and turn DEP on for all programs and services. Now reboot and try again.

  1. Windows Update isn't Working

While seeking laptop repair in Montclair, a lot of people have reported issues with Windows Update in Windows 10. At first, confirm that you've updated to the Windows 10 Fall update. If you're still facing problems, download and run the Windows Update Troubleshooter. Now reboot and attempt upgrading again.

If the problems persist, you may have to do a bit moreInitially, confirm that System Restore is configured, and create a restore point. Once this is done, use Win+X and choose Command Prompt (Admin), then type 'net stop wuauserv' and hit Enter. Choose 'net stop bits' and press enter. You'll receive confirmations that each service either wasn't running or was stopped. Now, open Explorer and go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistributionDelete the contents including any sub-folders. Then you should reboot, open Windows Update, and click Check for updates.

4. There is Lesser Free Storage Than Earlier

Even after installing Windows 10, the previous version of the OS is still consuming valuable disk space. The reason is that Microsoft isn't quite as controlling as a few other leading IT companies. Rather than compelling users to upgrade their hardware and simply move forward, Microsoft regulates the crucial files that consumed your earlier OS in the C:/ drive. This is relevant if you don't like the new Windows 10 and intend to revert to the earlier operating system that you might be more used to.

Once you like the new OS and wish to delete the old one forever, then click on the Windows Start button and type "cleanup" to search the system by default. A "Disk Cleanup" app appears in front of you in the search criteria field. Click on it to open the application.

A drive selection box will appear. You have to choose the drive on which your OS is installed. Initially, the default drive will appear. Usually, it is the C:/ drive. Once you realize that this is the main drive where your OS is installed, click on OK. Windows will scan your system for some time and then a box will pop up.

Now, there could be a list of files to delete right away, one of which is "Previous Windows Installation(s)", or if that option is not visible, you have to select the "Clean up system files" option on the bottom left.

5. Turn off Forced Updates

You may set up earlier Windows releases so that they wouldn't install updates automatically - one forced reboot is enough

There is a so for users running Windows 10 Pro: from the Start Menu, search for 'gpedit' and run the Group Policy Editor. By expanding Computer Configuration in the left-hand panel, you may navigate to Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update. Double-click Configure Automatic Updates in the list, choose the Enabled radio button, and in the left-hand box select 2 - Notify for download and notify for install. Now click OK, and you'll receive notifications, whenever there are updates.

Inference

There are other problems as well, and that can be written about later on along with their solutions.
